One thing to add to topic:

~All "in-store" content will be available for any character during offline PVE.~

Not to mention all the hats and exclusive items anyone missed in previous events.

Converting the game to single player would probably be a huge challenge. Much more realistic (and better for players!) is for them to opensource the server-side code so people could host their own servers.

Could do it like SWGemu did, write all your own server code.

sounds nice for when GW really died (GW dying does NOT sound nice, but it'll happen)

maybe they can make it so that its either on a cheap server, or make it offline with maybe LAN mode (would be fun playing with RL people even after its "death")

then people can still play good old GW without losing their stuff

then making your own future hats?

i hope they'll do something like this, IF it ever becomes that bad

There is no such thing as 'necroing' in Sarrdelac. (Well, unless you are Munne or Kasha)

As long as the suggestion is still applicable to the game, it's ok to bring more insights into it.

Even then, people won't get access to their current accounts, and will have to start anew.

That really isn't a problem in the current state of the game.

Or maybe it's the key factor here.

Most people still in the game are either:

- Aficionados that feel some special bond with their accounts and characters
- New players rushing for HoM rewards

Neither would have any significant incentive to start again, the former missing what they created, the latter lacking any significant purpose in playing on emulated, unofficial servers. Aficionados are also those that are most vocal about initiatives for future preservation of the game: they do care about the game as a software, but what they want preserved on top of anything is their game experience.

Still, that won't prevent anyone from trying to code some server emulator. I for one won't be using it: Guild Wars has been fun as a game, but now got boring and repetitive for me. I'm sure it wouldn't feel any better without my much loved account.

Wow how time does fly. Man, the things we have done in game since this thread first came into being.

But anyway, Gill makes a good point. My reason for having supported this notion over the years is to be able to keep playing from the point I am at now and not have to start from scratch. I have a ton of characters at various points through the campaigns and would like to finish all the content with all my characters at some point in the future.

We can hope that it never needs to come to it, but should that day come, I do hope that Anet can bring allow us to continue to enjoy the game with our characters for as long as we desire to do so.

yeah, not bad

after GW2 has gotten well off it's feet, and perhaps some resources are freed up, do something like they did in the last Star Wars MMO, where there was a final battle like right before they shut down the servers. Except......still keep the servers open =)

on the fence on this one....yeah I have been playing for almost 8 years (on yes, aug 28) and yeah I am kinda attached to my kids (all of them on all of my accounts), however; when its over I plan to give up playing games altogether so I would rather they did NOT offer this (its very hard for an addict to quit on their own, but with the thing of their addiction completely gone, its oh, so much easier!).

I will keep playing until I either complete everything I wish (at my rate that is about 5 more years at least)...or until they turn off the servers, at which point I will shed a tear and move on.

/signed for those who really need this

Anet could easily allow access to that if they wanted. If not, custom servers could easily let you start with lvl 20 PvE characters or boost XP/drop rates or make a cheap ecto/armbrace/zkey merchant so that grind is reduced. HoM and associated account-wide progress stuff can already be directly imported from the online HoM viewer.

Open access to their databases from unofficial servers? No way.

Sure thing.

But, would you really do everything AGAIN, even with all those facilitations, in a game you probably know perfectly well already?

What for, to have a precarious clone of your once great account on official servers?

Offline play sounds like a better option, but I doubt they'll ever spend resources on it when keeping the game running online is cheap as dirt.

Private servers are always a terrible thing to play on.

All that doesn't matter. I don't want to keep my chars for their wealth or the things they have completed. I want them cause they have a story, cause I have attachment to them, memories. So that would solve nothing.

To make it offline they shouldn't need to release the codes (and releasing them would be even bedder as part of it is used for gw2 too) and everybody could keep their chars. Sure you'd lose pvp and pugs, but it's not like they're very alive now, and I can't imagine in future. Just enable lan option so we can still play with friends.

Really, I'd die to see this implemented.

The question is, how much space would be needed on my computer to hold all the needed server side files to run the game as single player? Also, where would these files be stored for those doing a "first time, full install?"

Why do you think they wouldn't be able to let you download your character? It would require some work on Anet's part, but there is no reason there couldn't be a button on the character screen that lets you download a file containing all character stats/inventory/unlocks/quest progress.
